Caring for Your Hands

The old saying “You can tell a woman’s true age by her hands,” may have some truth to it. There are so many women (and men) who do not take care of their hands. Well, at least not as well as they take care of their face.

The skin on your hands receive the same damaging effects of the environment and sun as your face. Especially since your hands are rarely covered except in the cold wintry months.

Hands usually don’t receive the soothing benefits of moisturizers and sunscreens that you give the rest of your body. Your hands receive the harsh treatments of repeated hand washings which dries them out. Some have their hands in water even more depending on their employment or if they do daycare.

Your hands also touch paper, cardboard and other harsh materials all day long and that is doubly drying to your hands.

Think about treating your hands well by treating them the same way you would treat your face. Now that is a thought to hold onto.

Here are a few tips for keeping your hands younger looking:
  • When washing your hands use the mildest antibacterial cleanser available. Then gently exfoliate once or twice a week with an oatmeal or clay based type soap.
  • Use rich moisturizers with vitamin A and C products, glycolic acid products and peeling treatments. You should apply moisture at lease twice a day and always after doing dishes or washing your hands.
  • Using a sunscreen regularly with a minimum of SPF 15 will help prevent brown or liver spots which are directly caused by sun exposure. You get sun exposure even while driving your car.
  • Remember to protect your hands with gloves whenever you clean with harsh detergents or wash dishes. The hot water is very drying to all skin. You may want to apply a thin layer of moisturizer before putting on the gloves. And when outdoors working in the yard or garden, always wear gardening gloves.
  • You can use some of your face cream products on your hands at night. The cream will penetrate more at night as you won’t be washing your hands while sleeping. Or, if your hands are dry or to the point of cracking, you can use like a small bottle of sweet almond oil or wheat germ oil and massage into your hands before retiring for bed. Then cover your hands with a pair of thin white cotton gloves.
Here are a few additional tips to help keep your hands soft and supple:
  • Apply vitamin E oil or a good cuticle cream with vitamin E to the cuticles every night.
  • When washing your hands, use a soft-bristled nail brush to clean under the nails.
  • While in the shower push back your cuticles with a washcloth.
  • Always carry an emery board in your purse in case a nail tears or breaks. Rough edges of a nail can catch on clothing and of course, doesn’t look becoming.
  • Carry a purse-size hand lotion with you so you can moisturize your hands several times a day.
Are your hands and nails as pretty as those of a model or a beauty contestant? A beauty contestant can be eliminated from a contest for as little as biting her nails.

If your hands do not look like hands you would love to hold, then you need to spend some quality time on them each day. Each day make it a part of your beauty ritual to include time for cleansing, exfoliating, stimulating, lubricating, and protecting your hands.

Remembering doing a routine for 21 days and it becomes a habit, you will want to take a look at your hands to see if your hands are ready for that dish soap commercial.
