Cleansing Is First Step in
Skin Care Beauty Regimen

Taking care of your skin is the most important step in your beauty regimen. And don’t forget to be very gentle to your face and especially around the eye area.

Cleansing is a step that is done usually morning and night. There are two things you want to do when you wash your face: dissolve the dirt and oil on the surface of the skin and normalize your skin condition.

Basically cleansers consist of water, oil, and surfactants. The oil dissolves the oil on the face, the surfactants dissolve everything else, and the water washes it all a way. The amount of oil in cleansers varies.

If you use a cleanser that is too rich for your skin, it can clog your pores or if it is too drying it can cause irritation. So, choose the right cleanser for your skin type.

These are the various types of cleansers available: water-soluble, lotion, gel, foaming, cleansing milks, and oil-free cleansing lotions.

A water-soluble cleanser is non-irritating and can be used for general cleansing and all skin types.

Lotion cleansers are good for dry or sensitive moisturizers and leave a light film on the skin that skin as they contain milder surfactants and soothes it.

Gel cleansers are recommended for oily or combination skin. They are basically oil-free and are less alkaline than soap.

Foaming cleansers are good for normal and strong enough for combination skin.

Cleansing milks come in three forms for normal, combination and oily skin.

Oil-free lotions are good for combination skin and often contain glycolic acid.

Here is a step by stop process to cleanse your face gently:
  • Wash your face in warm water (not hot). The water helps loosen the clogged pores and stimulate blood circulation to the skin.
  • Wet the face, then place a small amount (about a dime-size) of cleanser in the palm of your hand.
  • With your fingertips, gently rub the cleanser all over your face in a circular motion for approximately 15-30 seconds. Let your fingers glide over you skin.
  • Then splash your face with cool (not icy) to tighten the pores and it will jazz up your circulation. If the water is too hot or too cold it can cause broken capillaries.
  • Now pat your face slightly with a clean towel, leaving a small amount of moisture on the skin.
If you have used a heavy makeup, you will need to cleanse your face with a makeup remover and then use your cleanser. Most facial cleansers remove most of the makeup, although not all are good for removing your eye makeup.

Not only do today’s cleansers remove the surface dirt and oil, they also protect the face and give it radiance by adding vitamins, antioxidants, emollients, and exfoliants.

And remember after a tiring day or a night out, you may be tempted to skip cleansing your face before falling into bed. You may not look so glamorous when you look in the mirror the next morning. Some say it can add 2-3 days to your age and your pores also clog.
