| in Skin Care Beauty Regimen Your skin constantly produces new cells and sheds its dead skin cells on a daily basis. Approximately every three weeks new cells push up from the lower layers of the epidermis and moves to the surface of your skin. And what happens to the cells during their journey has a big effect on the skin's appearance. At the end of the cycle the flattened and dried up cells are shed from the surface. Every 28 days normal skin renews it's cells. This process slows down with age. Exfoliating helps the nature process by giving the cells a little extra push. It peps up circulation and helps stimulate cell production. Removing dead skin cells helps your skin to have that healthier, plumper, and smoother skin cells on the surface. This can make a hug difference in your skin's appearance. There are times the old cells stick around longer than they should. To exfoliate means to rub (not scrub) the top layer of the skin loose and removes surface debris. It will even out the texture of the skin and makes it look smoother and less wrinkled. Exfoliating also makes it easier for the skin to absorb moisture and allows makeup to cover more smoothly. There are numerous products, facial scrubs, buffing creams, AHAs, exfoliating masks, silk mitts, or tritinoin, used for exfoliating or they can be as simple as a washcloth. When choosing your formula think of your skin type and what you want. If you are using products containing AHAs and tritinoin, make sure you use a good moisturizer as these can be very drying. Here is the best way to exfoliate your face: Take a little bit of exfoliating gel or cream for your skin type and gently rub it onto your cleansed face. Lightly rub the mixture around your nose, chin, and cheeks for only about 10 seconds. To really get the circulation going, splash your face with cool water. Rinse with warm water. Pat slightly with a towel. Exfoliants For Various Skin Types Normal--use a washcloth, an exfoliating rub-off mask, or an AHA product; Dry--use a gentle exfoliant such as a washcloth or silk mitt or a massage-in and wash-off exfoliating mask such as an oatmeal mask; Oily or acne-prone--use AHA product to avoid scrubbing; Combination--use exfoliants for normal or oily/acne-prone skin; Sensitive--use the gentlest exfoliate possible such as a washcloth with your cleanser, a silk mitt, or an exfoliating mask. Stay away from buffing creams and facial scrubs. You can exfoliate your face every two to three days if you skin type is normal; if you have oily or combination skin you can exfoliate four or five times after a cleanser; and if your skin type is dry you can exfoliate once or twice a week. If you have sensitive skin or acne, you should use a peel-off face mask instead of an exfoliator. If you have networks of surface veins, you should avoid exfoliating as it can intensify the problem. Exfoliating is the one part of a beauty regimen that is neglected and should not be forgotten and what an amazing difference it will make on your skin.
