Grooming Unwanted Hair

Unwanted hair can be as one irritating hair poking out of your chin area to the larger areas of the lower legs.

Your body hair grows all over the body in varying amounts, texture and distribution. The amount of body hair is based primarily on heredity, although excess hair growth may be related to medication or hormonal imbalance.

Removal of your body hair should be part of your personal grooming routine. How you accomplish it depends on the area of the body you are dealing with and on your individual needs and preferences. With the numerous methods of hair removal on the market today it should be easy to have a smooth face and body.

There is a wide range of different solutions from temporary to permanent methods for different areas of the face and body. Methods of hair removal are: shaving, waxing, depilatories, electrolysis, tweezing, and laser.

Shaving is this least permanent and probably the most popular method of hair removal. Some of the regrown hair may reappear within 24-hours. It is a temporarily quick and easy way to remove hair from your underarms, lower legs and bikini hair.

Shaving you legs you want to first moisten the hair and allow your hair to absorb water for at least three minutes while you are in the shower or bath. This helps the hair to swell and makes it easier to remove. Otherwise you can get razor burns.

Then lather on shaving cream or gel, shower gel, liquid body cleanser or a squirt of shampoo will do in a pinch and let it sit for a few minutes. If you want a close shave do not use soap. Forget the idea of shaving dry as bits of loose skin may clog up the razor.

Your leg hairs grow in one direction (down) so you want to start shaving at the ankle in an upward direction against the hair growth. After shaving your lower legs you should use a body moisturizing lotion as this will help keep your legs smooth and well conditioned.

If you shave the upper thighs and bikini line area you may have irritation and ingrown hairs with new hair growth. When you shave the bikini line, you should pull the skin taut to get a smooth surface. And if you need to go back over an area you should apply more gel or cream. When finished you need to rinse the area, pat dry and apply oil or moisturizer.

Your underarm hairs are different as they grow every which way and should be shaved every which way.

Here are a few shaving no no’s to avoid irritation:
  • Do not shave sunburned skin.
  • Do not shave immediately before a long bike ride, spinning class, or hike as you can chafe.
  • Do not exfoliate before shaving.
  • Do not shave dry skin or it is more possible to cut yourself.
  • Do not shave before jumping into a pool with chlorine water or before a massage, salt rub, or any other exfoliating treatment.
  • Do not apply an AHA product or sunscreen immediately after shaving.
  • Do not share your razor especially with the man in your life. A man’s hair is coarser than women’s hair so the blades become blunt more quickly and are apt to nick you
Tweezing, a semi-permanent method of hair removal, removes the hair by pulling out the root. It takes awhile for it to grow back. You should never tweeze hair from a mole or a mark on your skin.

An over-the-counter chemical method, depilatories, dissolves or loosens the surface hair. It is applied to your skin, leaving it on for a certain amount of time. Then when you wipe off the cream, the hair should come off with it.

The waxing method, less irritating to your skin than chemical depilatories, will last two to three weeks. This method is most often done in a beauty salon. There are also do-it-yourself kits. Hair re-growth occurs in approximately three to six weeks.

The electrolysis and laser are more long term methods.

Electrolysis is a hair-thin needle that transmits electricity into a hair follicle to damage the root. It has been used for over 100 years on the face and body.

The laser method is pulsed light aimed from a hand-piece into the skin where it targets the dark pigment in the hair. It is not as effective for blonde, gray, red or other unpigmented hair. This method must be performed by an experienced practitioner under qualified medical supervision.

It all depends on your lifestyle to which method works best for you.
