Lining the Eyes

An eyeliner or definer will emphasizes the natural setting and contours of your eye. A liner not only enlarges and draws attention to your eyes; it also adds drama and feline sex appeal.

Defining brings more definition to the lash line and makes your lashes appear longer, and fuller.

A liner is unbeatable for shaping and balancing the look of the eyes and for making the lashes appear thicker.

You may need to practice the precision techniques of applying a liner. But you will find it doesn’t take long to master applying both the liner and eye-defining pencils for an effect that will enhance your finishing daytime makeup look.

The main thing to consider is the effect you want to achieve. Do you want soft, smudgy definition or a sharp, intense line?

Brown or black eyeliners are the two most used colors. The liners are used on the top lid of each eye and sometimes under the lower lashes. Blondes, redhead, and light brunettes should use brown eyeliner. If you are a darker brunette or have black hair you should use black eyeliner.

Black eyeliners will make small eyes look smaller. It also gives a sexy, smoky look which is best to use when the rest of your eye makeup is intense. The brown eyeliner is a toned-down, softer version of black.

Eyeliner comes in three forms, pencil, powder, and gel which each will give a unique look. Lines should be pliable so that it will never tug at the thin skin around the eyes.

The pencil liners go on quickly and blend easily. They are an easy everyday option. If you choose the powder line, it is the most natural-looking.

If you choose a gel or liquid eyeliner, it is the most precise and long-lasting. It should have a quick-drying liquid with a narrow, tapered brush attached to the cap or in a pencil form. The liquid form is the hardest of the three to use especially if you have a shaky hand. They create a very fine line.

Apply pencil liner—

Sharpen the wooden eyeliner pencil to a round point and blow away the shaving crumbs from the tip of the pencil. It is important to keep your eye pencils clean and well sharpened but not dangerously pointy.

Start the pencil at the inner corner of your upper eyelid and follow your lash line to the outer corner in one continuous stroke. You need to stay as close to the lashes as possible. The width of the line can be controlled by varying the amount of pressure you apply to the pencil.

Repeat underneath your eye, by starting at the midpoint and working outward.

Applying the powder liner—

Dip the clean dry or moistened small, flat-edged liner brush or lip brush into cake or powder liner. Use the brush to dab the powdered liner in a series of connected dashes along your lash line.

To add intensity, just repeat along the bottom lash lines but start at the center, not the inner corners, and work outward to make your eyes appear wider.

To soften the effect of the powder, you can gently dab a cotton swab along the top line of color.

Applying liquid eyeliner--

You should draw the brush out of the tube and stroke it against the mouth of the tube to remove any excess liquid and taper the brush to a fine point.

Starting at the inner corner, you should draw a line along the upper lash line and continue outward. The line should be a thin as possible; you can always trace over it for a bolder look.

For a classic look, you can extend the liner past the outer corners of the lids and angle it slightly upward.

Using a sharp pencil or a stiff-edged brush, you will realize a liner can be as versatile and expressive as the most accomplished actress.
