Moisturizing is Third Step
in Skin Care Beauty Regimen

Moisturizing is a must no matter what type of skin type you may have or no matter what your age and especially if you are over twenty-five.

The reason for moisturizing the skin is to supplement your natural oils that have been removed by weather, time and soaps.

It is important to keep your skin supple and smooth with lubrication as it will prevent wrinkles and premature ageing.

There has been so much progress made with new technology in the area of prevention of ageing skin through cosmetics that it may even be possible that wrinkling will be unknown in the near future.

Some moisturizers contain ingredients that help temporarily repair damaged skin.

When you moisturize, you temporarily trap water in the skin. The moisturizers can plump the skin and give the skin a smoother look.

Listening to your skin will help determine the right moisturizer. If it doesn't retain enough water it will feel tight and dry. Some people may need a thick oily cream several times a day while others can get by on a couple drops of light lotion or a dab of gel once a day.

There are two types of moisturizers: humectants and occlusives.

Humectants moisturizers draw water up from the depths of the debris or attract it from the surrounding atmosphere. The occlusive moisturizers create an oily film on the surface to seal in the moisture and prevent it from evaporating into the atmosphere.

When choosing your morning moisturizer you should choose one with an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen.

Don't forget your neck area as it is vulnerable to lines and sagging. The neck skin contains fewer oil glands than your facial skin, making it drier and more prone to wrinkling. When applying moisturizer to the neck area you should stroke upward so you don't pull the skin down.

When applying your moisturizer it is best to have your skin slightly damp, pat it onto your skin instead of smoothing it on. This will help increase the circulation and invigorates your complexion. Moisturizing helps lock in the water in the upper layers of the skin and helps prevent evaporation.

Steps to moisturizing are:

  • Cleanse, and/or exfoliate skin
  • Pat slightly with a towel
  • Dot moisturizer all over face and blend; apply moisturizer with your hands on slightly damp skin.
An easy way to tell whether you need moisturizer is to wash your face with a gentle cleanser and then wait half an hour to see whether your skin produces enough oil to make it feel comfortable. Then if your face still feels tight in some areas, you need to moisturize those areas.

A light water-based formula should be used for normal skin. A heavier emollient moisturizer should be used for dry skin although you could use two different moisturizers: a light one for day and a heavier for night time. For sensitive skin you should find a product with as few ingredients as possible as this will help cut down on your chances of irritation. A oil-free product should be used for oily skin types. And if your skin type is combination you should use a lightweight, water-based moisturizer.

A rule of thumb with moisturizers is the thicker the texture, the more oil; the thinner the texture, the more water.

Using too much moisturizer can be as bad as not using any. So don't over moisturize as it can lead to clogged pores and blackheads. It can also slow down your skin's turnover time as the dead skin cells will have a harder time coming off.

If you use a day cream with a sunscreen you will want to use a separate night cream. The sunscreen is not necessary at night and if used 24 hours it can cause irritation.

If you warm your moisturizer between your hands for a few seconds before applying it to your face in cool weather it will absorb better. Then in warm weather you could store your gel, lather or cream in the refrigerator as the chill feels good on your skin and helps it look firmer.

Have you tried a tape test to check the effectiveness of your moisturizer? After you have applied your moisturizer, wait two hours and then place a piece of tape on your lower cheek, near the jawbone and then lift it off. If the tape is coated with scaly shards of skin, you should be looking for a new moisturizer.

Your skin should tell you if it needs moisture by the way it looks and feels and whether your product is working or not. And remember you may need to change moisturizer seasonally.
