Protecting Your Winter Beauty

Now that the cold season is upon us, it is time to think about keeping out the winter cold and shelter your skin behind a shield of protective creams to keep it moist and smooth. It is a time we are more aware of our ageing skin. Good skincare and beauty regimes are more important than ever.

The effects of the cold winter winds and air are drying, cumulative and inescapable. Don’t think you are immune to the winter effects. The drying winds can cause chapping and cracking of the skin.

Even though your skin is well cared for it can show fine lines of ageing this time of year.

Knowing that when it is cold, there is less moisture in the air and the air seeks moisture, pulling it out from everywhere -- including your skin. With your skin having less moisture it causes it to get scaly, flaky, and can have pale dull complexion.

Remember your skin type can change depending on the climate, the season and your age. So, you want to adjust your beauty regimen accordingly to your skin needs.

Your skin condition is affected by both internal and external factors. Among the external factors are: weather, the temperature and humidity of the air indoors, and simply soap and water. Internal factors are: heredity, age, and state of health, presence of disease, our nutritional habits and glandular changes such as adolescence, pregnancy, and menopause.

It can not be stressed enough the importance of regular moisturizing is the best preventive measure for aging skin. The earlier you start your routine with moisturizers and nourishing creams the better, but even a neglected skin will begin to show improvement after frequent moisturizing.

A good moisturizer for dry and ageing skins is a water-in-oil emulsion. These contain oils, fats, and waxes especially to nourish dry and ageing skin. These rich moisturizers are a good way to protect the skin from the weathering effects of sun, wind, and cold and also from the pollutants in the air.

Here are a few wintertime ideas—
  • Avoid using products with alcohol.
  • Apply moisturizers in layers to avoid getting cracked dry spots. Let the moisturizer dry between layering.
  • Change to a cleansing with non-drying gentle cleansers and use a moisturizing mask once a week.
  • Use a heavier, non-water based sunscreen.
  • To help lock in moisture, try using a glycolic acid product.
  • Use a good lip balm to protect the delicate skin on your lips. Phenol, an active ingredient in many medicated lip balms, can be drying. Thus causing you to keep re-applying the lip balm, and so on
  • Wrap a warm scarf around your face and neck when you are outdoors to help avoid broken blood vessels on your face from the sudden changes of temperatures. The scarf will also help protect your face from windburn.
  • A humidifier can boost the levels of moisture in your home or office.
  • You may switch to a richer, creamier moisturizer.
  • Normally your skin will look paler in the winter. You may want to switch your foundation to a lighter color, more appropriate color, or go the other way and get color from a self-tanning tube.
  • Don’t forget to protect your hands by remembering your wear gloves outdoors and moisturize after each washing. You may want to even do an extra treatment for your hands at bedtime. Apply a nice thick hand cream and then place a cotton glove on each hand before crawling into bed. Another helpful hint for the hands if they become very dry and cracked is using a paraffin bath a couple times a week.
  • To help keep your skin hydrated, apply a body moisturizer daily after bathing. The best time to do this is while the skin is still damp. Glycolic acid moisturizers help exfoliate the skin and keep it smooth.
  • Use a fragrance-free product if you have sensitive skin or a condition such as eczema.
Your makeup can be adapted to winter by using more dramatic colors for your eyes and lips. By applying more make-up on top of your daytime colors you will have that glamorous party face for your evening out.

Exercising regularly will help prevent adding any extra bulges through the winter. Eating sensibly will help ward off colds and infections and to help stay beautiful.

Having a consistent daily care program is a must. Protecting your skin helps prevent dryness, roughness and aging today and will help beautify it tomorrow.

Wintertime should be a time to remind yourself that nourishment is the only way to keep the skin young and supple.
