Tools of the Beauty Trade

Applying makeup can make you look like you want to feel…..Great! Giving you that feeling can be done by making a small investment in owning quality make-up tools. It all depends on how serious you are about looking your best at all times.

You may want to shop around a little as there are zillions of brushes, tweezers, eyelash curlers, and all the little extras such as makeup sponges, powder puffs, cotton swabs, a sharpener, and a handbag-sized mirror to name a few.

If you are spending high dollar on your make-up products why not find a good source to buy your tools. This will ensure quality and save you from wasting money on expensive gimmicks. Some of the professional make-up suppliers will ship and some of the department stores, pharmacies, health shops, beauty supply shops, a few home-based businesses or even an art supply stores carry the tools.

Having the right tools is what separates the finger-painters from the Picassos. Your tools will make a difference in how your makeup goes on and how it looks after it is applied.

You need full-sized good quality brushes in order to get the most from your make-up. If you don’t have a good quality brush the colors do not blend well.

Here are a few pointers in choosing your brushes:
  • Look for natural hair bristles that are smooth and feel soft. The bristle content is usually printed on the handle of the brush. Forget any brush that sheds or has a messy head.
  • You may want to test the bristles on your skin to see whether they are firm enough to place color with neatly and yet not too stiff that they scratch or pull during application.
  • The brush handles should be smooth and rounded, have a comfortable taper and long enough to rest easily in your hand.
The following are basic tools and accessories you may want to consider for your make-up kit or overnight bag:

You will need three or four good brushes (blush, powder, eye shadow, and lip brush), pencil sharpener unless you are using liners with built-in sharpeners, tweezers, triangular makeup sponges, a powder puff, eyelash curler, and tissues. Another important tool is your fourth finger or ring finger. It can be used for applying your eye make-up and for blending.

Here are the essentials:

Invest in a good medium-sized blush brush with a rounded tip. Use the same brush for highlighting. This helps create a natural look.

The powder brush should be the largest brush in your kit. It should also be a soft brush.

A blusher brush should not be too large. It is used to define the cheekbone and contour the face. Select a brush that the hairs are not all cut to one length. The shorter hairs are on the outside and the longer brush hairs are at the center. This helps to avoid a patchy look.

Your eye shadow brush should be small with bristles angled on one side. This will help you get the line you want when you use powdered eye shadow. It will also help fill in spotty brows.

The lip brush should be tapered on both sides to a rounded point. This will help you have a perfect lip line and an even application.

The tweezers you choose will last forever so buy a good pair. Tweezers with a pointed or slanted tip are the best because they are the most versatile and grab hair easily.

A pencil sharper will help keep your eye and lip pencils ready to work.

An eyelash curler has a strange look like it could even be torture but it does what it claims it will do, they curl the lashes. Curling the lashes opens up the eyes and makes them look bigger. And of course, you want that wide awake look.

An inexpensive tool would be your old toothbrush. Recycling your old toothbrush can have many lives and uses. It can be used to brush the excess mascara from your lashes so you don’t get little raccoon-like paw prints under your eyes. The old toothbrush can also be used to comb the unruly eyebrows in place.

Cleaning your make-up brushes should be done on a regular basis because they can harbor bacteria. They should be cleaned at least once a month. Your lip and/or concealer brushes require more frequent cleaning. Using a dirty brush can cause skin breakouts.

Brushes may be washed in warm water with pure soap or a mild hair shampoo. Gently squeeze out the make-up while the brush is under the water. Rinse thoroughly in clean water. Squeeze the bristles back into its original shape and place on a clean, dry towel to dry. Between cleanings you can use tissues to wipe off your brushes. After prolonged uses of your brushes, if they should stray off in different directions you can cut them back.

While you are cleaning the brushes it is a good time to take a few minutes to do your tweezers with alcohol to remove oil build-up that causes the tools to slip. Also wash your sponge-tip applicators, eyelash curlers etc in soap and water. Then just press out extra moisture and let them air-dry.

Replace your essentials as needed.
